Need a new fancy frock? Don't think you need to spend big bucks at a high-end boutique. Instead, get your gal pals together for a "clothes swap" soiree. It's the hottest fashion trend since oversize sunglasses-straight from Manhattan to the East Bay burbs. At a swap, guests bring designer duds and accessories they've grown tired of to trade with friends.
Even better than a girls night out, clothes swaps can set you up with a "new" ensemble. One word of warning: The success of these soirees depends upon your guests' definition of designer: Swappers can be disappointed if they are giving up Gucci to find only Target threads for trade. As for the leftovers, donate them to Wardrobe for Opportunity or to a charity," suggests Diablo Fashion Editor Carolyn Rovner*, who is planning a prom-dress swap for her teenage daughter and her friends.
